In this picture the people are actively doing something:
It's tough to find an illustration where somebody is totally passive. We are, after all, always breathing, standing, sitting, or, as here, lying on the floor. Nonetheless, this picture suggests passivity. It's not so much that the person has made a conscious decision to watch television, more that the program is being viewed, while the guy just sucks it all in. Perhaps we might say by way of description:
