• Here's what I noticed.  It would be good for your fellow classmates to pitch in and take a look as well.  Mr. A, 2008-05-07, 5:12 p.m.
  • While apud Helvetios is more or less the same as saying, "in Helvetia," that's not really what it means.  It refers to the people, not the place, which will always have an "a" in it.
  • Correct some interesting typos throughout.
  • The other consul is Marcus Piso.
  • fines = territory (occurs twice in text in different case forms)
  • omnibus is missing from the idea of leaving cum omnibus copiis
  • copiae = wealth, resources, property
  • facilius is not QUITE "easily."
  • locus = place
  • number ex parte = "on number side"
  • minus occurs twice, but has only been translated once
  • Where's itaque?
  • You have a run-on sentence.
  • What is the number of belli?

Book 1 Chapter 2

Ogetorix was by far the man of highest rank (and the wealthiest) among the Helvetians (In Helvetica). Orgetorix was by far the most important and most noble of the Helvitians. He, in the consulship of Marcus Messala and Marcus Piso, was wanting to be king, he made a conspiracy of the nobles. He having been influenced by the desire of kingship made a conspiracy of (with) the nobles, when Marcus Messala and Marcus Piso were consuls.

Among the Helvetians the highest ranking and wealthiest man was by far Orgetorix.

He, in the consulship of Marcus Messala and Marcus Piso, having been influeced by the desire of lordship, made a conspiracy among the noblility.

He persuaded all of the citizens to go out from their land w. their possesions() (He persuaded all of the citizens, so that they go out of their land with all possesions. <>)

He said it to be very easy

w/ their courage surpassing everyone,

to obtain the total command of Gaul. (He said that it was easy with their courage surpassing everyone, to take over all command of Gaul <>) (See below for an alternate version of the piece so far.)

He said that it was very easy, since they surpassed everyone in courage, to obtain the command over all of Gaul.

He persauded them easily

Because the Helvetians were held in on all sides by the nature of the place.*

From one side they are held in by the Rhine River *

which divides the territory of the Helvetians from the Germans.*

From another side they are held in by the very high Jura mountain range*

which is between the Sequani and Helvitians.*

From the third side the Helvetians are held in by the Lake Geneva and the Rhone river,*

which divides our province from the Helvetians.*

On account of this situation it happened that they were wandering less widely

and they were able to make war with their neighbors less easily

And so they were being afflicted with great suffering.

Because of these things it happened that they were wandering less widely and easily were they able to carry on war with their neighbors.

In proportions to the great number of people,

and in proportion to the fame of war and of bravery (???)

they were being believed to have narrow boundaries for themselves

which were spreading 240 miles in width

and 180 miles in height.

They were afflicted by great grief in porportion to their vast number of people and for the glory of wars and bravery

They deemed that they had narrow territories which spread in length 240 miles and in the width of 180 miles.

    • While at Helvatia the ranks of the men will be longer and

(ditissimus fuit) Orgetorix.

For, this consulship betweent Marcus Messala and MarcusPiso,

the King led on with desire, with

a conspiracy made from(by) the nobles.

All of the citizens were persuaded from him to along with him

to march on with him to the boundaries themselves.

He led them very easily, with all of them surpassing him, the whole of Gaul with Power.

*all of these stars mean that Paul's translation was basically right. The small tense changes I made I underlined.
