• The only further final revision I would recommend is that where the parenthicals (Fine/Fine also) are located, you turn those lines green and delete the parentheticals themselves.  Mr. A, 2008-05-02, 1:43 a.m.

The Helvetians having been influenced (who had been influenced, because they had been influenced) by these things and having been moved by the authority of Orgetorix decided to prepare these things which they needed for setting out (which concerned departure).

He influenced the Helvitians of this thing  (The Helvitians influenced of this thing)

and having been influenced by the authority of Orgetorix they decided to prepare these things which were needed. (1: Look at bottom for alternate)

They bought a great number of carts and yoke animals.

They bought as large a number as possible of yoke animals and carts animals. They made as many sowings as possible in order to have a supply of grain on the journey.

They made great sowings in order to have a supply of grain on the journey.

Together with the nearest neighbors they established peace and friendship.

With the nearest states they established peace and friendship.

They thought 2 years to be enough to for these things needing to be completed (extremely literal). OR They thought that 2 years was sufficient for accomplishing these things.

They confirm to set out on the third year.  (In the third year of departure they are fixed by decree.) (They fixed the departure by decree in three years)

(By law they established their departure for the third year.)

Orgetorix was selected to do the things needing to be done.  (For accomplishing these things, Orgetorix was being chosen.)

Orgetorix was selected for accomplishing these things. (for the things needing to be done)

He himself took up the office of envoy to the states.  (The office of envoy that he took upon himself for the nation.)

He undertook the office of ambassador to the states. (the blue doesnt need the "that")

On this journey he persuades - ?(Tense)? Casticus, of the Sequani, to seize the kingdom of his state.

On this journey he persuaded Casticus, a Sequanian, to seize power in his state.

Casticus's father (had) held the kingdom of the Sequani for many years and was called friend by the senate of the Roman people. (Casticus' father had held the kingdom of the Sequani for many years and had been called friend by the senate of the Roman people.)

Casticus's father had held power among the Sequani  ("in Sequani" but in + abl can be "among") for many years and had been called friend by the Senate of the Roman people. (OR had been called friend of the Roman people by the senate.)

And also (likewise he) persuades Dumnorix of the Haedum that he might try this thing.

(And also) Likewise he persuaded Dumnorix, a Haeduan, so that he would try the same thing.

Dumnorix was the brother of Diviciacus and for a time held supremacy in his land with being very popular with the people.  (Instead of "for a time," at that time)

Orgetorix gives his daughter in marriage to him.  .

Dumnorix was the brother of Diviciacus and at that time held supremacy in his state and was very popular with the common people. (was very well received by the common people). Orgetorix gave his daughter in marriage to him.

"It is very easy," he said, "to arrange this, because I myself ?(would)? obtain control of my nation. (because I myself am about to hold my state's sovereign power.) There is no doubt that the Hevitians ?(were)? the most powerful in all of Gaul. (There is no doubt that I will be the most powerful Helvitian of all of Gual.) With my own resources and my own army I shall obtain kingdoms for you." Influenced by this speech, they gave an oath-bound pledge between themselves.

"It is very easy" he said "to arrange this because I myself am about to obtain power over my state (of my state literally). There is no doubt that the Helvitians are the most powerful of all Gaul (over all Gaul). With my resources (troops) and my army I shall obtain kingdoms for you." Influenced by this speech, they gave an oath-bound pledge amongst themselves.

With the kingdom having been seized, they hoped to be able to obtain Gaul through all three of the most powerful nations. (thru 3 of the most powerful nations they hoped to be able to obtain all of Gaul themselves.)

After power had been seized, they hoped that they would be able to obtain all of Gaul through (the actions of) the three most powerful nations.

1: The Helvetians influenced by this thing and having been influenced by the authority of Orgetorix, decided to prepare these things which were needed to set out.

Helvetians who were influenced by this thing and having also been influenced by Orgetorix decided to prepare things for they were about to set out. They were to buy the greatest of numbers of yoke and two wheeled carts.
